Reading 8

Class Description
*  Reading instruction in the learning support classroom is very structured.

*  Students are tested and placed in a group based on their reading strengths.  This group then works together throughout the year to acquire the necessary skills to improve their reading.

*  The students' reading fluency is checked daily and recorded weekly to monitor their progress.

Grading
*  Grades are based on a point system that is linked to the group's performance each day.  They earn points from word-attack activities, oral reading and comprehension of a story, reading fluency checks, and workbook/skills activities.  Each day they receive a class work grade for that day's lesson.

*  Test grades come from the average of 5 daily lessons.  So, every 5 lessons, the students receive a test grade.

*  A class participation grade is also averaged into the grades.  Every student begins each nine weeks with 100% for class participation.  They lose participation points for coming to class unprepared or misbehavior.  Class participation counts as one test grade each nine weeks.
