Please let me introduce myself to you. My name is Nevin Iliev and I am a graduate of Millville High School, class of 1990. My collegiate background includes a Bachelor of Liberal Arts from Lycoming College, a Master of Human Development and Secondary Education from George Washington University and a Master of Elementary Education from Bloomsburg University. For years, it had been my dream to teach in my hometown. Happily, this dream was realized when I moved home from Alexandria, Virginia where I had been teaching and resumed my career at Millville Area School District.

For me, teaching English as a Second Language to students from around the world while helping them to honor their diversity, is a great privilege. I enjoy meeting new students, helping them to adapt to our culture and watching them grow as individuals.

English as a Second Language (ESL) refers to instructional programs for students who are not yet proficient in English. English Language Learners (ELLs) refers to the students who are enrolled in ESL classes because they are developing their English language skills.

Students whose first language is not English and who are not yet proficient in English are eligible for ESL. If the Home Language Survey indicates a language influence other than English, the child's records are reviewed to determine if services are needed. English proficiency and program placement are based on several measures including a language test, standardized test scores for reading and writing, student records and personal interviews. It is important to remember that though a student may demonstrate proficiency in the language necessary for social situations, this does not mean they have developed the language skills necessary for academic learning. This level of language learning is essential for students to succeed in school. The goal is to provide our students with the time and support they need in order that they become proficient in these areas.

Our English as a Second Language (ESL) program is designed for students who are in the process of acquiring both academic and social English. It is our goal to provide a language rich environment in which students participate in lessons and activities that will develop and enhance their English language skills. Instruction is centered around specific language objectives in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing to help students develop the English language skills necessary for both academic success and survival in the social settings they encounter.
